What did I learn about the passive voice?

The passive voice is a structure in English commonly used when you want your texts or speech to sound more formal. However, it is not a structure that you should use in every sentence of your speech, as this can make it difficult to understand your message. It is very common to find this structure in the news. Let's see why.

The passive voice is used when:

  • You want to be more formal.
  • You don't know who or what performs the action in the sentence.
  • The subject in the sentence is NOT relevant.
  • You want to focus on the object of the sentence and not the subject.

Examples:

  • His new book was just published.
Su nuevo libro acaba de publicarse.

  • The girl was raised in a boarding school.
La niña fue criada en un internado.

  • The song was written by Shakira.
La canción fue escrita por Shakira.
